Edition Thus. 1991. 16 mo., 41 pp. The only piece that Burton the actor
wrote, this strongly felt memoir of his childhood is a poignant and
heartwarming recollection of Christmas. An Afterword by Sally Burton plus

2.     Howells, William Dean. Christmas Every Day: a Story Told a Child. Pocket
Books, N.Y. Nov. 1996. Originally published in 1908. The delightful story of a
father reading to his daughter at Christmas. This is the story that Richard Paul
Evans used in his contemporary book "The Christmas Box". Adorned with the original

Originally publ'd in Austria. Oblong 8 vo., unpaginated (24 pp.). When Santa 
Claus tells the forest animals that he is not looking forward to delivering all
those heavy packages, they are worried that there won't be a Christmas anymore.
To help them understand that Christmas would come even if he didn't, Santa tells 
the story of the first Christmas, and they all learn a good lesson about the
true meaning of the day. Wonderful colour illustrations by Ivan Gantschev. Glossy

windows to see into the next page. A little mouse sets out on a cold Christmas
Eve to visit his friends. He finds they are all too busy to talk to him.
Finally, Owl gives Mouse a ride home where Mouse finds all his friends waiting

8.   (Rackham) A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
Chancellor Press, Lon. 1986. The classic tale of the
miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge. B/w drawings plus 12 colour
plates by Arthur Rackham who first illustrated this
book in 1915. These colour plates pale in comparison
to the quality of the originals, but this is still a
charming copy of the famous Christmas story. Glossy

9.    Christmas Carols: illustrated with greetings cards
from the Queen Mary Collection. British Museum Press,

traditional carols and well-known Christmas songs have
been carefully matched with festive greetings cards
collected by Queen Mary, the wife of King George V. A
number of the cards are extraordinarily rare examples,
including some designed by Kate Greenaway and some
chromolithographic examples printed by the Castell
Brothers of Bavaria. Some of the carols included are:
Away in a Manger; It Came Upon the Midnight Clear; 
Deck the Hall; O Little Town of Bethlehem; Watts' Cradle

Jack, a young rabbit, buys the perfect Christmas present 
for his sweetheart but the present runs off and Jack has to
chase it throughout the village. He catches it just in time
to make it to Ginger's party and give her "the perfect present".
Marvelously-illustrated in colour by Michael Hague, one of

preparation, the wondrous eve, the day itself, the days afterward--
Boxing day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and Twelfth Night.

29.   Tolkien, J.R.R. The Father Christmas Letters. Edited by Baillie

Rings wrote letters to his children every Christmas from 1920 onwards
in the guise of Father Christmas. The letters spoke of the friends
